It is always a good idea to start the research process by looking for background information on your topic.  Finding background information is especially important when you are unfamiliar with your topic or just want to gain a general understanding of your topic. 

You should look for background information if you want to:

• Learn more about your topic
• Narrow down your topic
• Explore the historical context surrounding your topic
• Identify the experts who are knowledgeable about your topic
